Azul Cantina

941 Spruce St.
215-627-5200

Mexican/Southwest, Gayborhood

Azul head chef Jesse Vega is whipping up “celebrated street food” at this 50-seat cantina and tequila bar, which offers some stand-outs but still needs a bit of fine tuning in terms of eats. While entrées like seared scallops served in a corn purée spiced with hot chiles de arbol suggest that the culinary soil at Azul is plenty fertile, boring steak sliders and dry mahi mahi tacos say otherwise. Azul is a great place to suck on a margarita, however, and the drinking experience is decidedly more even. The addition of blood orange to one margarita makes for a perfectly tasty summer quaff, as does another that’s injected with melon puree, which is only improved by a chili-salt-encrusted rim. If straight-up tyequila is the name of the game, there are a few dozen varieties to choose from, some organized into tasting flights that run from straight-ahead blancos to ultra-aged varieties. Open daily, 4 p.m.-2 a.m.; brunch served Sat.-Sun., 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

  • Average entree $10 – $20
  • Late-night dining
  • Brunch served
  • Liquor license

I ate lunch here the other day and the food was amazing. I have been looking for a good mexican restaurant in the area and I’ve finally found it. I had the flank steak tacos which were flavorful and simple. The guacamole was very good and the watermellon and basil mojito-ish thing was one of the best drinks i have ever had. I will definitely be dining there again.

This place is amazing for any Mexican food lover. I live in the neighborhood and I am so exicted for this recent restaurant addition. I stopped by for happy hour on Friday and the food was exceptional. What a great addition to the neighborhood – Looking forward to many more visits here! Far best freshest Mexican in the area

This place is not in the gayborhood. The gayborhood is bounded by Walnut, Juniper, 11th and Pine. Just sayin…

My Wife and I with our family ate there the other day the food and presentation and atmosphere was unbelievable. It was SO GREAT. My wife and I are going to have our sons Graduation dinner there in March 2009. For a pure dinning pleasure that is unforgettable. Executive Chef Jesse Vega congratulations on being one of the Best if not the Best Chef in Philly.
